The International Energy Agency (IEA) has been at the heart of the global discussions of Covid-19 recovery plans addressing the energy sector: providing a comprehensive series of impact assessments; actionable recommendations for economic recovery plans; and making full use of the IEA’s ever-growing convening power.
Carbontech has rapidly evolved from a scientific possibility into a climate change mitigation imperative. This has led to growing interest from entrepreneurs, investors, corporates, and civil society. All pathways to meeting Paris Agreement climate goals involve solutions that can capture, utilize, and permanently sequester CO2 emissions.
Although the necessity to transition to a carbon-free economy is broadly acknowledged, we have no shared understanding of the feasibility, reliability, and economic rationales for pathways to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero and even make them negative. Models can help us explore what everyday life without emissions could look like, and how alternative technological pathways might perform.
A Climate Team is a new cooperative mechanism composed of a small group of countries:
1. A host country, characterized by having significant opportunities to reduce net emissions in the short term, but insufficient resources to accelerate low emissions transformation, and;
2. Partner countries with resources but limited short-term opportunities to meet their mitigation commitments. A Climate Team assists and rewards the host country as it effectively implements climate policies.
The Linux Foundation, Allianz, Amazon, Microsoft, and S&P Global have joined forces to build the non-profit, open source OS-Climate platform of data and analytics for climate aligned investing and finance. Ceres, SASB, WWF, and many other organizations are collaborating to build this breakthrough solution for providing the trustworthy data required to rapidly scale up reallocation of capital on a global scale.
It’s time to think differently about the future – about how we respond to unanticipated events like COVID-19 and how we prepare for and mitigate the natural, societal and economic risks associated with climate change. When individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems are resilient, they’re able to withstand, recover quickly and thrive – no matter what adversities they experience.
Limiting global warming to 1.5⁰C above pre-industrial levels will require businesses and industries to look beyond their own direct emissions. Partnering across value chains in every sector is critical to ensuring lifecycle decarbonization and achieving sustainable outcomes. In this session, we will examine the value chain elements from the technology sector and discuss the challenges and opportunities in the transition to a net-zero future. Technology impacts all sectors of the economy and is integral to everyday life for people and businesses worldwide.
