Holistic Wellness to Fight Climate Change: Harnessing Schools as the Heart of the Community

Perkins Eastman, a global architecture firm with 17 interdisciplinary studios around the world, is committed to designing a better future. Our purpose is to enhance the health and well-being of people, communities, and the planet, through design.

Wellness is an increasingly important topic, and has become all the more critical in recent months. When thinking about “wellness” in design, however, the focus is often on individual wellness – and how the built environment in particular can impact an individual’s personal health and well-being. While this can and should be a priority, we should be careful not to forget how intrinsically connected our personal wellness is to the wellness of others, and to the wellness of the planet. With that, we’ve developed a framework to evaluate wellness holistically, across multiple scales both from the people and place perspective as well as from the individual to the planet. This framework allows us to propose viable solutions which both foster wellness of people, while simultaneously fighting climate change.

In this session, panelists will discuss the interrelationships between wellness of people and wellness of planet in the age of changing climates, exemplify the role that school design plays as the heart of climate-resilient communities, and provide valuable insights on how to apply these strategies into practice.
