According to International Maritime Organization (IMO) research on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, international shipping’s GHG emissions account for 3% of the global total. If no measures to control shipping-related emissions are taken in the future, the industry’s contribution to GHG emissions will more than double in the coming years. To this end, the IMO adopted a preliminary international shipping GHG emission reduction strategy in 2018. 174 member states agreed to reduce their GHG emissions from shipping by at least 50% compared to the 2008 level by 2050. Furthermore, in 2019, the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy released “The Ocean as a Solution to Climate Change” report, which analyzed the maritime shipping industry’s huge potential in reducing GHG emissions and addressing climate change. On the virtual EU-China Summit on September 14, China and the EU agreed to establish a High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate and to forge China-EU green partnerships. In addition, the European Parliament also adopted an amendment to EU-wide regulations on maritime emission monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) on September 15, facilitating the inclusion of carbon emissions from ships departing or arriving at the ports of the 27 EU member states into the EU’s carbon market.
In the current context of China and the EU’s cooperation to address climate change, how can key sectors like the shipping industry participate in the carbon market’s development, mobilize stakeholders such as ports, shipping companies, shipbuilders and fuel suppliers to work together in reducing the industry’s GHG emissions, and in turn realize a low-carbon, green transition? To answer these questions, the Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition’s (BRIGC) Oceans thematic partnership and the Environmental Defense Fund will jointly hold a seminar, “Green Shipping: An Urgent Step to Fight Climate Change”, during the Climate Week NYC.
The webinar invites global experts to discuss topics related to green shipping, including the areas specified as follows:
- The potential emission reduction measures and impacts of the shipping industry
- The IMO’s international shipping emission reduction strategy and long-term plan
- The impact of the EU’s maritime emissions amendment on including ships in the EU’s carbon market
- Coordinated management of shipping-related GHG emissions and ports’ pollution emissions
- Challenges, opportunities and financing channels for international and regional cooperation on green shipping
