Climate Action 2.0: The Next Decade of Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Climate Resilience Efforts in U.S. Agriculture

At the start of a new decade, the agriculture sector is evaluating what’s working and where additional effort is needed to meet the industry’s climate mitigation and adaptation goals. The stakes are higher than ever before. Extreme weather events threaten to reverse U.S. agriculture’s long-term productivity gains at a time when global demand for food is rising. In the same way, many global companies have also established ambitious, science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets with looming deadlines. As a result, the agriculture community finds itself caught in the middle—as a source of greenhouse gas emissions, a solution for carbon sequestration, and the industry most at risk from increasingly volatile weather patterns.

As part of Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture’s 2020 Cross-Sector Dialogue series, this roundtable discussion convenes food executives, farmers, policy leaders, scientists and conservation experts to explore some of the most innovative examples of how the food and agriculture value chain is scaling the adoption of climate-smart farming, while also examining the serious consequences of not meeting our collective goals to address the climate crisis.

Guest speakers include:

  • Helena Bottemiller Evich, Senior Food & Agriculture Reporter, Politico
  • Eric Olson, Senior Vice President, BSR
  • Polly Ruhland, CEO, United Soybean Board
  • Karimah Hudda, Global Sustainability Lead, Procurement, Mondelez
  • Andrew Knepp, VP Environmental Strategy & Industry Activation, Bayer Crop Science
  • Dennis Todey, Director, USDA Midwest Climate Hub

 Highlights of the agenda include:

  • Temperature Check: Are We Making Progress on Our Science-Based Targets?
From the Paris Climate Agreement to corporate greenhouse gas reduction goals, the scope of our collective ambition to curb climate change is bold. Speakers and participants will explore whether the industry should redouble or reimagine its approach to sustainability, and if we are making progress at the scale and pace that is needed.
  • Scalable Solutions: Sector-Specific Strategies to Accelerating Climate Action
From farmers to consumer-facing brands, the entire value chain will benefit from a more resilient agricultural system, and each sector has a unique role to play in delivering solutions. Participants will discuss how the next decade of climate action will look different than the last, and surface shared solutions for how greater supply chain collaboration can accelerate progress

Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, brings together a diverse group of grower organizations; agribusinesses; food, beverage, restaurant and retail companies; conservation groups; universities and public sector partners to focus on defining, measuring and advancing the sustainability of food, feed, fiber and fuel production. By uniting the agricultural value chain around a pre-competitive sustainability measurement framework and process-based standard to accelerate continuous improvement, Field to Market seeks to harness collective action to support resilient ecosystems and enhance farmer livelihoods. Field to Market is comprised of more than 140 members representing all facets of the U.S. agricultural value chain, with members employing more than 5 million people and representing combined revenues totaling over $1.5 trillion.

This event is part of the Food and Land Use, Nature and Science, and Climate Impacts and Adaptation programs.
