At the start of a new decade, the agriculture sector is evaluating what’s working and where additional effort is needed to meet the industry’s climate mitigation and adaptation goals. The stakes are higher than ever before. Extreme weather events threaten to reverse U.S. agriculture’s long-term productivity gains at a time when global demand for food is rising. In the same way, many global companies have also established ambitious, science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets with looming deadlines. As a result, the agriculture community finds itself caught in the middle—as a source of greenhouse gas emissions, a solution for carbon sequestration, and the industry most at risk from increasingly volatile weather patterns.
As part of Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture’s 2020 Cross-Sector Dialogue series, this roundtable discussion convenes food executives, farmers, policy leaders, scientists and conservation experts to explore some of the most innovative examples of how the food and agriculture value chain is scaling the adoption of climate-smart farming, while also examining the serious consequences of not meeting our collective goals to address the climate crisis.
